The History of MediTek Stairlifts (1990–2026)
MediTek Stairlifts began in the early 1990s in the North East of England, where Kevin Strafford‑Price—who co‑developed the first battery‑powered stairlift drive and continuous‑charging rail technology in the late 1980s—worked with his engineering partner to create one of the UK’s most respected battery‑powered stairlift brands. Over the next three decades, MediTek produced nearly 200,000 stairlifts worldwide, supplying a broad dealer network across Europe, North America, South America, and Australia.
In 2018, the MediTek brand was acquired by Royal Otolift Stairlifts, the largest stairlift manufacturer in the Netherlands. MediTek’s straight‑rail models were reintroduced as the “Otolift LINE,” and the company’s history is now included in Otolift’s official timeline . The MediTek stairlift although an aging platform remained well regarded by dealers and technicians for its simplicity and reliability. Its successor, the Avalon Stairlift, has been redesigned from the ground up specifically for the American market, addressing the need for a dedicated U.S. support channel.
European stairlifts, while excellent in their home markets, do not always align with U.S. building standards, staircase geometry, or electrical requirements. These differences highlighted the need for a purpose‑built American approach.
Avalon Stairlifts USA continues the MediTek legacy with a clean‑sheet U.S. design philosophy—preserving the simplicity and reliability that defined MediTek while ensuring full compatibility with American homes and safety expectations.
